TOURIST
My twitter novel so far.

He shielded his eyes from the sun, back when the world had oceans this
had been Hong Kongs main harbour. Now a desert of archaic ships.
~
He scanned the horizon for dust storms, his arm hissed and clicked as he lowered it.
The children pined about his boots, always thirsty.
~
He gave the water first to Han, he was eldest, he had found him outside Chengdu amongst the remains of his family, victims of the bad men.
~
Han gave out the water to the other children, he had found them all in his trek across the land once known as china, all except Bairn.
~
He un strapped Bairn from his back, as the small boy drank he recalled finding him in Scotland, just a newborn. They had been together since.
~
They tracked the old man south into the dusty wastes, weaving between the sweeping dunes and sheltering in strewn burnt out wrecks.
~
Sometimes they asked him how he lost his arm, sometimes he would tell them, they were always disappointed. He was no storyteller.
~
They came across the telltale signs of Badmen. The bodies dismembered and hung off an old piece of rigging. The children are scared.
~
We sheltered that night under the rigging. I tried to cut the bodies down but they were infested.
I am starting to have doubts.
~
The children asked my name. I told them I am a tourist, I had seen it wrote somewhere and thought it right. Han called me Tor and it stuck.
~
More signs of Bad men but the old mans trail is also fresh, the children want to turn back. I push us on, there is little water now.
~
One of them is sick, she seems small in my arms. Han blames me, I see it in his eyes, if it is the infestation she will die.
~
Her sickness has passed, Han and the others seem happy. Together we leave at sunrise following the old mans tracks into the dusty frontier hopeful now.
~
The End.
