‘the oldest and strongest kind of fear’'
(A Homage to Howard Lovecraft)
by Sam Coleman
151 words.
@indigo_sam

He had stood euphoric before them, his hands frenzied with his mastery of moving his music.

It began with the strings, it had seemed to him that something repulsive whispered in the viola and the harp. Then the build, the flurry, he heard it laugh in the woodwind and roar in the drum, he was unable to stop himself, caught like his audience in the rapture of the song, consumed in the repugnant beauty of each traitorous note. The great worm twisted and writhed within the very beat of his work, from what delectable dimension of horror and allure did his talent stem?

As the brass peaked in crescendo the answer came and his eyes opened to the true conductor, the composer of all men, he trembled realising the crimson curtains would never close again for him and he whispered in a voice not his own

‘The Shew must go on’

‘‘Matriarch’’
Sam Coleman
150 words.
@indigo_sam

The old house squats betwixt the pines, her dust covered windows concealing within like eyes milky with cataracts.

The furniture was covered in plastic as I started to scrape back her skin. A cream coloured layer with a brown interweaving pattern came first, it matched the furniture. Next a royal blue pattern against white. The bright astronaut decoration of a child’s room gave way to a foul mustard coloured floral pattern. Again and again I peeled back her coloured chameleon flesh and as I did I pulled back the veil from her past until I stripped her down to her archaic wooden bones. A large brown stain spotted the wall, that familiar iron pungency, almost sweet. The horror welled up within me and broke into screams as the sea breaks upon the shore and I knew then, I was looking upon her face.

Apple.

~

They met upon the crest of the hill in the shade of a great apple tree overlooking the sea. Lilith moved up beside the old woman wearing a similar aged human form herself. A sign of respect or mockery, it mattered little now.
‘I never truly believed he had died all those years ago and to think the world will remember him aged only to 930’
Lilith tapped her old human nose with a finger ‘We know better’
‘I take it you come here for vengeance’ she spoke softly.
Lilith was silent a while looking down upon the grave.
‘My revenge died with him, we were never enemies you and I, rivals perhaps’ she smiled ‘I came to say it is done between us now sister’
She stayed beside his grave long after Lilith left faithful wife that she was and deep within the apple tree even a serpent bowed its head in respect.

Prologue for Avengers script.

As a little fun exercise I wrote this story as a re imaging of the marvel universe as if I was setting the scene for a new avengers film. The premise is Steven Rogers turning on america in a Korean conflict setting. Although easily seen as anti american this story was actually designed to give me a setting in which I can explore in depth the morales behind the american super hero icon.  In march 2002 America under shield jurisdiction creates a superhuman response force. The team is led by captain Steven Rogers the world war two veteran also known as captain America after he is found frozen in an old Nazi facility off the coast of south Africa.

The team was hugely successful in protecting America and her interests with successful deployments throughout the middle east and north Africa most notably for their influence during the defeat of Iraq in 2003.

On December 30th 2011 Kim Jong-un is made supreme commander of the Korean peoples army. Throughout 2012 Kim Jong-un stockpiles nuclear weaponry. In late 2013 north Korea uses nuclear based WMD’s against the city of Ho chi minh (previously known as Saigon) killing hundreds of thousands. By December 2014 Korea is unified under the command of Kim jong-un and America and her allies declare war against Korea. The superhuman response team publicly enters the war with former president Obama stating in a press conference-

‘’The American superhuman response team will be deployed at this time in Korea in the pursuit of vengeance and justice for those that died during the bombing of Ho chi minh fourteen weeks ago...’’

After this announcement the S.R.D (superhuman response division) was publicly known as the avengers during the war effort. While all original members of the S.R.D took part in the initial stages of the conflict s.h.i.e.l.d was unsuccessful at recruiting any of Americas other super humans with many opposing the war altogether. The fantastic four gave a press release stating they would remain neutral throughout the conflict until a peaceful solution could be obtained. Shield did not disclose whether the weapon x division of shield would deploy operatives within the Korean theatre with both Carol Danvers (spokesperson for shield) and the president stating that the conflict would remain mutant free, he went on to point out the rumours of Eric Lensherr being used within the conflict as nothing but ‘fabricated rumours’ developed to frighten the American public.

With Kim jong-un  in hiding and Korea's borders under American jurisdiction the avengers are used to defeat the ‘gorilla rebel fighters’ operating throughout north and south Korean territories. With growing pressure from the Russian presidency tension began to grow and the threat of another cold war. A media blackout throughout Korea was ordered and enforced under American authority in November 2015. The world no longer gets information from within Korea although strange weather patterns and radioactive measurements cause many to believe America has deployed her own nuclear weapons. The media blackout is lifted January 16th 2016 revealing large areas of Korea destroyed with hundreds of thousands dead. January 17th 2016 Captain America is officially revealed to have been killed in action during the media blackout. Several days after the announcement hank Pym also known as the giant man by the public and Janet van dyne aka the wasp are also reported dead. Funerals are held and captain Americas damaged shield is buried with him near the u.s marine corps war memorial near Arlington national cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

A matter of weeks later Tony Stark pilot of the Iron man suit resigned from the S.D.R and was given a place within shield intelligence. The iron man suit schematics previously a secret were released to the American military, specifically shields own tech division. The two remaining members of the avengers the Russian black widow and Hawkeye have not been publicly seen or mentioned within media since late 2015. During this time the fantastic four are killed in a terrorist bombing at the Roswell new Mexico army base. The streets of new york are filled with civilians paying tribute.

In march 2016 the president of the united states declares in a statement-

‘’During this turbulent turning point in America's history I have seen it fit to activate for a short time only the weapon x division of shield in the hope of preserving order within the Korean theatre of action and America herself’’

After significant political upheaval the president later apologised for his statement saying his speech made it sound like America was deploying mutant weapons on American soil, the president went on to assure the world this was not the case and that this was a temporary measure,he also assured the American public the war would be won by the end of the year these statements were later confirmed by by Carol Danvers and Tony stark during separate press talks.

March 19th a video is released on the Internet from within Korean territory for the first time since the war began. The video goes viral within the hour. The video shows a man who identifies himself as captain Steven Rogers.

Of Madidas.

Of Madidas

Deep in the mountains through veils of mist, under the wet tree roots, rummaging and slowly fumbling about his tunnels lived a hunched beast. He was kin to the evil things that lived in the dark woods and crept in the sewers of man, the nameless things that stole away children in the night and performed unspeakable evils. This creature had grown to be the biggest and strongest of his kind but had rebelled against them, sick with the evil he saw in them. He left them behind climbing the great mountain peaks, high amongst them he hid, under moss covered stones, drinking the golden amber sap from the white trees.

For many years he had dwelt there all alone and whether it was the sap or his own unique nature he began to change, he understood more of the things about him and learnt the speech of bird and tree. Living alone, this hermit creature built a vast subterranean lair and loved nothing more than to rummage through mud and stone. His life was not without danger, for there were other creatures of crueler nature that he shared the mountain with, the most dangerous of these were the Serpent Kindred of Mourn; long black beasts with large gaping maws and small cruel eyes. He learnt much of these creatures and saw in them the same evil that lived in the heart of his own kind. From afar Madidus learnt much of Mourn the Great Serpent King, rebel son of the old Gods.

Deep in the azure pools of the ruins of the first watchtower, he named himself *Madidus after the old tongue and took in on himself to protect the old things he had discovered living beneath the earth. Through the trees and dwindling race of birds Madidus learnt of Mourns true nature, Mourn had declared war against his father and taken his power, twisting it to his own means. Mourn had poisoned the white trees and destroyed the old races of the mountains, only one race still fought him and his serpent children. This race was man,  untrusting and warlike people who Madidas viewed from afar wishing ever to join them for they shared his love of the growing creatures. But man was hardened by war and could not be trusted.

The men who fought this war were the men of Orsilin, the spear makers, sword smiths and the craftsman of the finest weapons heroes could wield. Years of war against mourns fierce black skinned children had worn their number. The great mountain cities of man had one by one fell to be replaced by serpent haunted ruins, the cities had dwindled until only Orsilin remained. Its weary besieged warriors cast in long grey cloaks stood sentry on every windswept mountain top about Orsilin, always watching the valleys below. The serpent sons of Mourn cut of Orsilin from its ore mines preventing them crafting new weapons and gathered slowly over a few years, coming closer for the kill, poisoning Orsilins water to make the inhabitants sickly and feeble. They were too few in number to protect the white trees now.

Mourns poison spread and one by one the trees and birds fell silent, the great and beautiful pools in Madidus’s home were poisoned with the venom Mourn secreted. Serpents dwelt now in his old halls, Madidus’s home was taken tunnel by tunnel forcing the creature to live in constant fear. The serpents developed their own word for Madidus which roughly translated as ‘he who builds alone’ for the serpents could smell there was just one creature in these long tunnels but even on their longest hunts never found Madidus, for he was cunning.

Madidus lived like this for many years more awaiting the rebirth of the mountains, he collected the old white tree seeds keeping them fed on fresh water, where he could find it and desperately he lived and watched man slowly fail against the rising tide of serpents. Mourn became King of the Stars and rode the starlight with his children into war against his enemies in the form of great spiders.

Madidus studied the lore of his land long and hard but the serpents haunted him ever more prominently and fresh water was becoming rarer, he began to grow ill and tired and the slower he got the closer the serpents hunts became, they saw him now turning corners in the distance, they smelt him hiding in the midst of them behind secret mud walls.

Then in the spring of a nameless year a mortal man from distant lands came and destroyed Mourn and threw down his power on the world. Broken and poisoned Madidas waited and slept, healing himself in the earth connected to the Grough, the great living energy that flowed through all that thrived and grew.

Madidus rested through the five year war. This war saw man hunt down all of Mourns children throughout the mountain realm. Without his children began to deteriorate, their bodies rotted and became weak and soft, their minds slowed and they forgot their own speech. Man sought them out showing no mercy, hunting and killing them as they were once hunted. Mourns final son was killed trying to leap from the worlds end waterfall, the highest flowing water in all the mountains. Here in a desperate leap to avoid his human hunters mourns final son was caught and killed and so ended the five year war after Mourns death and the cleansing of the land.

The mountains grew beautiful once more as Mourns poisonous hold over the world faded into memory. Sustained and healed by the Grough Madidas was born again. He walked under bright star filled skies, through the flowing rivers and visited all his favourite halls reclaiming them and clearing away the serpent filth left there. He returned to his peaceful quiet life and was happy to again walk the mountains and tell stories of the humans and their war against Mourn to the trees who had slept through the dark times.

It was through the trees madidas heard of what the humans had done to the serpents, the terrible five year revenge they had wrought upon their weakened foes. He heard of rivers running red with ancient serpent blood and nests of their young mercilessly burnt and Madidas became sad for he knew that war and suffering had only taught man to cause pain and genocide in return. The world was good again but man had became a hollow thing. He no longer loved the birds that sang nor looked after the good land that had cared for them. Madidas pondered this for a long time, how could he make man remember that there was more to the world than death.

Several years after mourns final son had fell and one year after the trees had spoke to Madidas the people of Orsilin awoke to find something incredible. In the center of their kingdom amongst the cobbled paths one brilliant white tree had began to grow. One tiny plant of a kind that man had thought extinct had returned. From far off hidden amongst the roots of a budding tree Madidas watched as the seed he had cared for all through the dark days flowered. He watched as man built up a shrine around that single white tree, he watched as they danced and sang about it remembering their old songs and he watched as man left crafting swords and spears to make instead great songs and great works of art. Madidas watched all of this happily and slunk back to his deep halls of cool stone.

*Madidus- Latin for wet, moist, soaked, drenched
